This course is designed primarily for people who work in banks and other financial institutions. Such employees have at least two areas of interest. First they must deal with foreign customers on a day-to-day basis. Thus, they will have to engage in dialogues with customers about deposits, loans, transfers, remittances, etc. Secondly, these employees must master the complex world of international finance, so they must be able to read about the various innovations, such as Bitcoin, Microfinance, Investment accounts, etc.
The course is also suitable for advanced students who intend to work in the finance industry. Thus, university students and even late high school students can benefit from the course. For example, university business majors may take the course as supplementary to their undergraduate studies.
Bank employees are expected to have a reasonable level of English. Therefore, this course is not for beginners. It assumes a level of English required of most bank employees, and so it does not focus on grammar and basic rules of English, which would normally be treated in a General English course. Rather, it emphasizes vocabulary and phrases used in the financial industry.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, the students should be able to:
1. Hold a conversation in English with a bank customer on the most common banking topics.
2. Master the basic vocabulary of finance and banking.
3. Read financial documents, either internal to the bank, or internationally.
4. Describe the main tools of the financial industry and to explain the differences between them.
